Sam Cheung- Head Coach
Coach Sam Cheung enters his first full year as Head Coach of UCONN Avery Point Men’s Basketball (Associate Head Coach last season). Before UCONN Avery Point, Coach Cheung was an Assistant at the United States Coast Guard Academy and as Head Coach for Montville High School. As an Assistant at the Academy, Coach Cheung lead the program’s player development initiatives and helped guided the team’s offensive strategies. During his tenure there, the Academy teams won 2 Conference Titles and appeared in 2 NCAA Tournaments – a feat only accomplished 3 times in the school’s history. Furthermore, during the 2008 NCAA tournament run, the Academy reached the Elite 8 (never been done before in school history)!
As a player, Coach Cheung was a 1st Team All-State point guard in Connecticut for Waterford High School, a 1st Team All New England Men’s Athletic Conference player for the Academy, and was inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013.
Away from Basketball, Coach Cheung is an Operations Research Analyst and a Project Manager for the US Coast Guard. He holds a B.S. Degree in Operations Research and Computer Analysis from the Academy and a M.S. Degree in Manufacturing Systems Engineering from the University of Rhode Island.
Coach Cheung currently resides in Montville, CT with his wife Jennifer and two children Jada and Jace.
Brian Lewis- Assistant Coach
Coach Brian Lewis enters his first season as Assistant Coach at UConn-Avery Point Men’s Basketball. Before UCONN-Avery Point, Coach Lewis was a 15 year high school and Prep High School certified boys basketball official. As an official Coach Lewis was selected to officiate numerous state playoff games in GA, VA, SC, and MA throughout his career. Prior to officiating he was a coach with the Charleston, SC Sixers Amateur Athletics Union (AAU) program 15U boys leading them to the AAU Nationals in Orlando, FL.
Coach Lewis played Varsity Basketball all 3 years in high school at Olympic High School in Charlotte, NC where he was an outstanding point guard and led the Trojans to the state playoffs in North Carolina. Coach Lewis resides in Groton, CT with his wife Veronica and they have four children and two grandchildren.
