Avery Point is the only UConn Regional Campus that provides its students with opportunities to participate in intercollegiate sports. Students can choose to participate in men’s baseball, men’s basketball, or women’s basketball. All three teams compete against teams in the NJCAA Region 21.
Since 1999, the UConn Avery Point (UCAP) Baseball Program has posted an impressive record of 483 wins and 122 losses, an average of 37 wins per season. During the past 14 years, UCAP has won 10 NJCAA Division II New England Championships, five East District Championships, and five World Series appearances in 1999, 2004, 2010, 2011, and 2013. The 2010 team earned an impressive 41-10 record and were the National Runner-Up in the 2010 World Series. Once their short careers at Avery Point come to a close, many players continue on to play at the collegiate and professional levels, a tribute to our exceptional coaching staff. Twenty-seven UCAP players have gone on to play professional baseball, including three alums who played for MLB teams in 2013: Rajai Davis, Toronto Blue Jays, Pete Walker, Toronto Blue Jays, Pitching Coach, and John McDonald, Boston Red Sox.
Although relatively new to Avery Point, the men’s and women’s basketball teams have enjoyed similar successes, qualifying in multiple years for post-season play in the New England Championships
Participation in athletics is an important part of a well-rounded undergraduate experience, providing these student-athletes with important leadership opportunities. Many players maintain a delicate balance among their studies, practice and game schedule, and work schedule. The Pointers continue to succeed as student-athletes in the classroom as well as on the diamond and court. Through their hard work, dedication, and accomplishments on the athletic field and in the classroom, the UCAP athletes serve as role models for their fellow students. We are pleased and proud that we can offer our students these opportunities. GO POINTERS!
